Engine Change
Engine Change on a "wounded" B-17 in England. HQ USSTAF Public Relations, Photo Section took this photo as the old and new engines of "Tomahawk Warrior" rest side-by-side at completion of first stage of full change. German fighters' 20 mm cannon shells knocked out two of the engines during May 24 Berlin mission, while overstrain at full power finished off the remaining two which brought the bomber home safely. Ground crewmen here are removing and washing salvageable parts in gasoline and putting other finishing touches on new engines before installation. The men of two ground crew teams get "Tomahawk" back into the air sooner in the stepped-up pre-invasion offensive.
